Ted Lieu reports more than $600,000 for race to succeed Waxman

By Jean Merl

State Sen. Ted Lieu (D-Torrance), widely viewed as a leading candidate in the crowded race to succeed Rep. Henry Waxman (D-Beverly Hills), has reported raising more than $600,000 for his campaign, with more than $579,000 left in his campaign coffers.

According to a report filed with the Federal Election Commission on Tuesday, Lieu had brought in $621,762 by the March 31 end of the fundraising quarter; that included a $55,000 loan he made to his campaign.

Lieu also reported an additional $66,000 in unpaid campaign bills.

Lieu joins some other Democrats who earlier Tuesday reported raising more than half a million dollars for what is expected to be a very expensive race. They are defense attorney David Kanuth, former Los Angeles city controller and councilwoman Wendy Greuel and journalist and radio show host Matt Miller.

In all, 18 candidates are on the June 3 primary ballot to succeed Waxman in the 33rd Congressional District: 10 Democrats, three Republicans, two small-party candidates and three with no party affiliation.
