CONGRESSMAN LIEU RESPONDS TO DONALD TRUMP'S ATTACKS ON ASIAN PACIFIC AMERICANS

Congressman Ted W. Lieu (D-CA) issued the following statement in response to Donald Trump's recent comments about legal immigrants to the United States:

"Donald Trump has now expanded his bigoted attacks to include Asian Pacific Americans. Trump announced at a rally in Maine that he is increasing his ban on Muslims to include legal immigrants from “terrorist nations.” Some of the examples he cites include legal immigrants from the Philippines and Pakistan.

As an immigrant from the Asia Pacific region, I find Trump’s newly expanded proposal even more offensive. But it is more than just offensive, it is dangerous. Trump’s racist thinking—“there’s no way of vetting” legal immigrants—is exactly the thinking that caused one of the darkest periods in American history: the internment of over 100,000 Americans because they happened to be of Japanese descent. (And for the record, Trump has stated he might have supported the internment).

Trump’s expanded xenophobic proposal also weakens US national security. America is strong because of our diversity not in spite of it. Having served on active duty, I know that our military is the greatest in the world because we don’t care what color you are, who you love, or what religion you practice. We just care if you can do your duty to our nation with excellence.

Trump’s proposal to ban Muslims dishonored America. By now doubling down and expanding that proposal to include Asian Pacific Americans, Trump again shows that he is unfit to hold the highest office in our land. Trump should have apologized to Muslim Americans long ago. Now he needs to also apologize to Asian Pacific Americans.

CONGRESSMAN TED LIEU RESPONDS TO DONALD TRUMP'S COMMENTS ABOUT UKRAINE

Congressman Ted W. Lieu (D-CA) issued the following statement in response to Donald Trump's comments today that Vladimir Putin would not invade Ukraine.

"Having served on active duty in the United States military, I know how critically important it is that our Commander in Chief not only have the right temperament for life and death situations, but also not be ignorant or brash. When you ignore facts in the sensitive area of national security, people die. Donald Trump's braggadocio and false statement that Vladimir Putin is 'not going to Ukraine' and that 'You can mark it down. You can put it down. You can take it anywhere you want.' is not just embarrassing, it highlights again how unfit Trump is to be our Commander in Chief.

The Republican nominee's weird attraction to Vladimir Putin is also cause for concern. Playing footsie with Russia and supporting one of America's enemies is unbecoming and dangerous for anyone seeking to become our Commander in Chief. It is time for Speaker Ryan and other GOP leaders who care about our national security to withdraw their endorsement of this dangerous man."

CONGRESSMAN TED LIEU RESPONDS TO DONALD TRUMP'S COMMENTS ABOUT GOLD STAR FAMILY

Congressman Ted W. Lieu (D-CA33) issued the following statement in response to Donald Trump's recent disparaging comments about Khizr and Ghazala Khan, Gold Star parents of U.S. Army Capt. Humayun Khan. On the last night of the Democratic National Convention, Khizr Khan, his wife Ghazala by his side, recounted to the crowd how his son was killed in 2004 by a car bomb in Iraq. Mr. Lieu spoke at the convention immediately following Mr. Khan and had the opportunity to briefly meet him and his wife after their powerful speech.

“Slandering a mom and dad who lost their son in service of our country is a new low even for Donald Trump. Having served on active duty in the US military, and as a Colonel in the Reserves, it is difficult for me to watch the Republican nominee continue to bring down America and our good people. I will continue to pray for Trump’s dark, dark soul full of hatred and contempt.

What is more surprising is that Speaker Paul Ryan continues to stand by Donald Trump. Having served with Speaker Ryan, I know that in his heart he does not share Donald Trump’s hatred, racism, or sexism. I call upon Speaker Ryan to do what his heart has been telling him all along and withdraw his endorsement of Donald Trump."
